Do I need a permit for my pet?
Yes, all dog and cat owners must have a valid permit for their pet.
Valid across Montréal territory, dog and cat permits must be renewed every year before they expire. The tag provided by the City is valid for the pet’s lifetime. Renewal fees of $10 apply after the permit expiration date.
Sterilization and microchipping mandatory
Since January 1, 2020, sterilization and microchipping are mandatory for all dogs and cats.
Cost of permit
The annual permit cost is standardized throughout Montréal territory from now on and this permit is valid in the 19 boroughs.
- Cat: $12
- Dog: $28
- Walking Permit: $100
- Assistance dog: free of charge
- Assistance dog in training by a specialized institution: free of charge
- Animal adopted in a shelter (15 days) : free of charge
